The 5th Global Day of Slow Living, created to attract attention to the idea of people using their time wisely and in harmony with the environment, will take place simultaneously in New York and around the world on 28 February 2011. The theme this year is Ambitions and Altruism.
The 5th Global Day is a true world event with more than 100 events taking place contemporaneously around the world over several days.
Previous editions of the Day have been based in Milan (2007), New York (2008), Tokyo (2009), London (2009, Slow Down London) and Shanghai (2010). In 2011, the event returns to New York, which has undertaken a series of moves to improve itself for its citizens including the closure of some key areas to motorized traffic, the addition of many new bike paths, the transformation of some areas like High Line into relaxing pedestrian walking areas, the implementation of campaigns against obesity and smoking, and so on. For these reasons the non-profit Arte del Vivere con Lentezza will recognize the city, which is run by Mayor Michael Bloomberg, in the hands of Adrian Benepe with an award that is created by the well-known italian designer Francesco Argenti.
Many initiatives foreseen for the 5th Global Day of Slowness, see the Programme.
The initiative will be sponsored by the city of Milan, Pavia and the Province of Pavia.
